Has anyone put an OG Astro City front marquee assembly on a new Astro city? I am a much bigger fan of the original. (Not my cabs in the pics but the yellowing on the "new" one is pretty spot on lol).

I've not heard of anyone doing that, but I approve. I'm not a fan of the New Astro City speaker setup. I get why they did it, but it breaks up the sleek design in my opinion.

Same while iconic, never been a fan of the NAC speaker setup. Its like a tacked on erebuni shogun kit from the 90s. It begs to conform, but looks so hideous.

Someone has had to of done it?

I have both, and I like them both. But we were talking about this very topic the other day, and someone mentioned they've seen conversion kits in Japan for it. I don't see why it would be that hard.

You can get repro marquee panels, and I'd have to look to see how the speaker mounting works but I'm sure that's solvable. What you'd be missing is the speaker grilles. I was pondering this last night, and I think there are a few ways to do it, but one easy one might be to 3D print and paint some. With a little sanding a some paint they should look pretty spot on even up close I'd think.

You can also get perforated metal meant for this, but I'd need to look at how it's shaped, not sure how much of a pain that would be.

The easiest method though would be to see if someone would swap with you. Never know, someone with a regular Astro might dig the NAC look and want to just do a trade of parts.

What benefits do the New or 2 have over the original? Is there any real reason to get one of those over an original?

It should be possible to swap the front hood as I call it, the only thing thats really different are going to be the speakers and I havent personally checked but even that may use the same wiring connections. I dont see why its not possible to just swap them the main body is the same build construction.

The only major difference between the New Astros and Astro is that the New Astro had upgraded speakers (enclosed) instead of the smaller open frame ones the regular astro has. Other than that the only other major change was during the New Astros life the MS9 monitor was out and that was being used on that cabinet. The Ms8 and MS9 use the same tube but the chassis and yoke are different.

Minor things would be the slew of optional upgrade addons for like running Model2 boards and power supply revisions the NAC received but thats all less major feature wise. And I have personally seen these options and parts swapped around both OG Astros and New Astros at least used. Operators do what they can to keep things running.

if anyone is looking for a set of regular Astro marquee/light coverings, I have a set available. Even have the speakers.
Just trade me a New Astro equivalent set.

The real answer is you get what's available. An Astro with a clean MS8 is better than a NAC with a slightly burned MS9. Either beats not getting a cab at all, don't wait around for one or the other in your situation.

The speaker difference is negligible, and it's easy to upgrade an Astro with way better than factory speakers anyways if you really care about sound.

I should add since I reread this if the part in question is just the marquee speaker grill area and not the entire front hood. I THINK if memory serves on the standard astro there is extra materials on the entire front half of the unit that the 2 speakers screw into. You may have to do some modification work and possibly mounting tape or something to swap between NAC speaker shrouds and standard astro marquee.

I have a container coming that has astros and new astros in a few weeks (all spoken for now). If I can remember to do so I can take a closer look for everyone.

That would be good. Yeah obviously the speaker’s need addressed. But with no speakers involved does the plastic piece swap in and line up. That was always my curiosity.

I haven't actually done it, but I am 99% sure they swap. I'll confirm later.....

From memory, they don’t swap. I have tried it and there’s points that don’t align where you need to screw in. I bought a front assembly for the same reason and moved it on due to this.

Also the Astro speakers are a different OHM value when compared to NAC or AC2.

In the minority. But I like the look of a NAC much more than the OG Astro.

I took a good look at the cabs and the surface area is the same. So you could technically swap the parts around, but it would require some compromises and/or modifications.

I personally like either astro, as long as it has an MS9 😀

Yeah just as I thought I recalled sega altered the original astros mold to allow for the new speakers originally they attached directly to that main front hood/bezel section. You would have to destructively modify your original Astro to put the New Astro Speakers in. Potentially some other modifications.

You should be able to easily swap that entire front bezel/hood assembly to do the swap but actually getting such a part or shipping that would be more hassle than its worth imo. Even then you might have to do small alterations to the wiring for the speakers?? and the light fixture?
