I've gotten hold of a Taito Mexio 86 which is missing it's top board. Basically this is the same hardware as Kiki Kaikai is using, except for a MCU that differs (and maybe some PAL-chips).
Has anyone tried converting this into a Kiki Kaikai?

Might be possible if you patch code for Kick'n'Run MCU.
As you said hardware is identical appart from MCU and perhaps PROMs/PALs. Kiki Kaikai has even the communication connector and associated RAM installed but doesn't make use of them.
Can you send me the references of the PROMs/GALs on your board?
Also it's worth noting bootlegs of Kiki Kaikai are terrible, bootleggers couldn't reproduce the MCU accurately and some ennemies can't be killed or can't kill you.
So unfortunately for genuine experience you have to play on the OG (and expensive) board.

A friend of mine has an original Kiki Kaikai pcb and the only real difference except for the extra ROM-board and the MCUs are these BROMs.

Kiki Kaikai: A85-08, A85-09 and A85-10

Kick and Run: A87-10, A87-11 and A87-12

All other PALs are the same between the boards.

Ok thanks for the precision.
Those PROMs are used for colours (one for each, red/green/blue).
They are simple arrays and can be converted in GAL devices.

Sorted, bad ROM socket and the 4 pin JST connector was missing.

@Apocalypse i was free wheelin last night and burned the dumped mcu for kick n run to see how the board would react, no luck though

A particular soccer game. Much more fun than the KikiKaKai, Mexico 86 was a worldwide success. Kikikaikai who knows him?

Mame says the MCU dump is bad?

MCU labeled TAITO A85 01, JPH1020P, 185, PS4

ROM_LOAD( "a85-01.g8", 0x0000, 0x0800, NO_DUMP )
Mm seems correct then.

Is it possible to exploit the program code make it bypass the check against the MCU?
Like with the Irem M72 rom sets?
