what are these PCBs going for ?
Small chip on the case of varth from shipping and a jumper wire on the C board ?? Not sure what it was for when I originally got it.

Mercs same thing. Not sure if the chips on the bottom right are original guy told me the stickers fell off and he put those to protect the eeprom.

Would like to trade for other games.

BS, the only non original labels on your board are the 4 on the program ROMs. That's a region conversion.

We've been talking about Varth a lot lately in my local arcade group. I think some points came up like only the Japan region boards have the suicide battery? Can anyone confirm this?

Software wise there's this:

The Japan region has checkpoints while the World and US versions have insant respawn.
I would love more info on regional differences if any and if it can be obviously deduced if this board was region modded. I don't think it hurts the value too much, but yes there are a small percentage of collectors who would now pass on it.

@KaPH33n That Varth looks like an original World revision that has a Japanese grey case put on it.

  • If you zoom in the image you can see the program roms are labelled VAE. Japanese program roms are VAJ, US program roms are VAU. The "E" is common to Europe and Asia regions (E is for ETC).
  • It has mask roms for graphics data. Japanese region CPS1 didn't use mask roms.
  • Japanese region has a different B and C board. That small C-board doesn't support battery. Yes, Japanese is only one with battery. The others had a different C-board CPS-B-xx chip.
Here are some pics of a Japanese Varth: http://richy13-arcade4life.blogspot.com/2011/03/new-arrival-varth-cps-dash-pcb.html . It looks to be a legit Varth, but not Japanese region. The cover is a nice bonus though.

I've only had the JP version in hand, which uses C.P.S.-B-21 with battery on the C-Board. According to mame, other versions use C.P.S.-B-04, which $5 says is on the bottom side of that C-Board in iGaroux's photos.
