Hi guys,
I am very new to owning Sega Chihiro hardware. I have two OutRun2 machines that are not connected and currently running in single player mode. I know that they are Chihiro Type 3 systems and I was told that they were once linked together. I would like to get them linked back up but I cant seem to find the info on how to do it. Can anyone explain what cables need to be connected to what/where and what settings need to be changed for the link to work.

Thanks in advance!

I ended up clearing all of the settings that were in the machine. Then in the Network Settings (Media) I set both machines to Ether, gave them each a specific IP address (10.0.0.1 +10.0.0.2) and gave them matching subnet numbers (255.255.255). I then ran a ethernet cable from each Chihiro to a 8 port hub. I then found the last step in the manual. It was to set the machines in a group giving each a specific # and how many machines were in the group.

Powered them up and it showed that they were linked. I spoke to a friend in the IT world that explained how IP addresses and subnet work. He gave me those numbers to use. Had a few races against my son last night. What an amazing game in twin mode!!!

To my knowledge, the game assigns new ip addresses to the system once it's started. The initial network settings are needed for netboot, but not so much for the game itself. If your cabinet was initially a twin, it should have a network switch mounted in the back of the system.

Fun fact. If you choose to not use the hub and you use a 4 port router (linksys):

1. Make router id 10.0.0.9
2. Start ip with 10.0.0.1 on the router
3. Car # 1 must have chihiro ip 10.0.0.1 and be plugged into port 1
4. Car # 2 must be 10.0.0.2 and plugged into port 2

If you swap the chihiros to triforces on the fly that have the default ip 192.168.29.x they will auto config to 10.0.0.x via the router

I don't see how that's relevant.
The 4 lan ports of a router are simply having a switch functionallity, so it's normal this works.
I also doubt it makes a difference in which lan port you plug in the cables. That's not how a normal switch works.
(It could make a difference on some high priced managble switches if they are programmed bizarre.)
I doubt the sega switch that is mounted inside a dual seat riding cabinet is something special.
It's likely just a rebranded commercial switch.

When using a router, if you put 10.0.0.2 into port 1 and 10.0.0.1 into port 2 the chihiros will try to link. They will link then crash the link. The 2 chihiros will wipe the ip address but keep the wrong last digit and try to assign a new ip. The thing was the origional hubs (switch) didnt have an assigned ip to the individual ports. The sega schmatics do indicate to put 10.0.0.1 to port 1 and 10.0.0.2 to port 2 but dont indicate the consequences of misconnection. That and my outrun 2 twin only came with 1 hub between the 2 units. This is also different then the schmatics. Also my hub was dead and i had to use a router. Thought this would be helpful for others if they have to use a router.

The original sega switch was 8 port. So one is enough to link 4 outrun 2 twin cabinets.
Can you point to a link that show the schematics who indicate there should be multiple switches?
Basically, a twin doesn't even need a switch or hub. You can simply connect the 2 chihiro's with a crossover cable.
You will need one if you load the game using netboot.
