Hi Folks,

I finally dug into my SegaCD (model 1) today and try and figure out why the tray kept opening and closing and wouldn't work. I got some new belts for it.

I have it all apart, and while I can rotate the gear just fine and it pulls the tray and down - it seems to do almost a 360 degree rotation of the gear, but when I put the tray in, it hits the spot where there are no teeth, and just stalls out....

It doesn't seem like I have any gear teeth missing, either on the gear, or the gear rail on the bottom of the tray.

I watched a bunch of videos - but can't really figure it out. It seems as if the gear really only fits one way also.

Anyone run into this, or have any ideas?

Pictures of the gear when the tray is both up, and down.

No experience with the Mega CD1 i'm afraid but I do recall a similar experience with the PS2 fat disc tray. There was some kind of alignment issue where the laser sled going up/down was out of sync with the drawer going in and out.

Absent anyone having solved this problem - does anyone know of anyone in the US with experience that could do the repair work on this to get it going, maybe throw a recap in there as well?

I have hit up all the places I could find searching with Google, and thus far have come up with a big fat zero.

Matt

I had this exact same issue on my Mega CD model 1 - there were multiple things wrong in my case

You need to remove the tray, rotate the gear all the way to the end before you reinstall the tray. If you are moving it in and out manually it will seem like it’s not going to work, because it will not engage the gear that lifts the laser up

Once you have it fully reinserted, manually drive the gear that lifts the laser into position. It should now work normally if you power it on

If it doesn’t (as was the issue with mine) the gears that drive the laser have probably gone bad. You can easily get replacements of one or both, only one of mine (the white one) was bad but I replaced both at the same time

The other issue I had with mine is the limit switches. Both the front and back limit switches were not registering when the drive was open or closed so it would constantly open and close the drive and grind constantly trying to open or close it further. They are an absolute pain to access, but can be easily cleaned with IPA or a very light abrasive cleaner on the contacts if they are really bad

This brought me back. I remember trying to repair a Model 1 around 98-99 with my friend. His brother has an almost complete Sega CD and Sega Saturn collection.

The tray would not work. We had no idea what we were doing but I thought since I had installed a few PSX mod chips I was the tech expert. Just fiddled to no end unsuccessfully.

Glad you got it repaired!

Woohoo! Thanks @xodaraP - she's all working again! All I had to do was to put the tray in, and fire the unit up after getting it put together, and its all working now.

Appreciate it!

Matt

Glad to hear it!

I removed and reinserted the tray dozens of times thinking that large gear was broken before I just tried it and it worked lol
