So, if you're into Sonic rom hacking, you've probably heard about Sonic the Fighters : Remix. If not, TLDR it's a romhack by TDRR that unlocks all the characters hidden in the game code + other gaming stuff that makes the game a bit more tournament-ready.

Read more about it here:
https://forums.sonicretro.org/threads/sonic-the-fighters-remix-v3.42866/

The hack was made for Xbox-360, PS3 and Model2, but it had never been tested on real hardware, only emulation.

Well, as a matter of fact, turns out it does work on a Model2 B CRX, it's only two roms to replace !

In order to play it on my NNC, I bought a Jamma to Model2 adapter on YAJ with ATX power supply, as my cab already has a Jamma harness

I've also bought a 400-5443-01 15A JVS power supply, so I could eventually power it through the cab. Coming soon.

And, as the Model2 stack in its cage definitely can't fit inside a NNC, I installed it on a leftover plank of wood replacing the back door.

Hi, glad to see you got it up and running.

The Sonic Championship service manual shows that power should be connected to CN9 and CN10, and it looks like you have it connected to CN10 and CN11. I would recommend swapping the CN11 power to JAMMA connector to CN9 on the filter board to ensure the components on that side are pulling enough juice.

But as it seems this is only a temporary solution until you get one of the JVS power supplies it should be fine for now.

Thanks for the advice, I've swapped it as you said. 👍

I already have the 15A JVS PSU, I just need to get it wired to the Model2. For now it runs on an ATX PSU, with an ATX to JST-NH power harness. So I'll just need to make a JVS to ATX adapter.

I have noted some slowdowns in game, when lots of models are displayed, like in Aurora Ice field with that mirror effect, or when lots of rings are dropped, when Fang shoots all around etc. Is it some normal Model 2 performance, or is there something wrong somewhere? When you mentioned components not having enough juice, I immediately thought it might be the cause, but switching the power connector did not solve the slowdowns.

So I made this prototype JVS to ATX adapter, from leftover cables and a 5€ ATX extension from Amazon. It may reach final form someday if I get enough components to order to justify the shipping fees.

But hey, it works, and now the 15A 400-5443-01 JVS PSU can power the Model 2.

I kept the ATX power harness, so I can still power it up with an ATX PSU, so the game can be played on other cabs than mine without worrying about the PSU.

This is soo cool
Sonic the Fighters is such an underrated gem

I discovered how good this game is about 6 months ago when I saw competitive tournament matches

Yeah, the story behind this game is very interesting. It was pretty badly received by the time of its release, mostly due to the gameplay feeling simplistic, and characters looking like a Model 1 game, despite being presented to the public the same year as Virtua Fighter 3. Few arcade release in Japan, even fewer in the US, and none in Europe. No Sega Saturn port. The game did not got the attention it deserved until 2006 with Sonic Gems Collection, and the discovery of all the hidden content, including Honey the Cat who ultimately got more famous amongst the Sonic Fandom than her Fighting Vipers human counterpart ever was.

Now the game is gaining in popularity amongst VS fighting game players, being streamed as side events of bigger tournaments, but players now play on the PlayStation 3 HD port, patched as Community Edition to enable the hidden characters, and edit some frame data to make it a bit more balanced. But it is rarely seen running on official Sega Model 2 hardware.

I remember Sonic The Fighters being at one of the Arcades downtown when I was growing up

I was surprised because at that time it didn't look all too serious but more like a casual fighter almost like Pocket Fighters

I actually tried buying this on XBOX Live and PSN months back but was only successful on grabbing the PSN version on the PS3

The only way to grab it on XBOX Live is to buy this expensive Sonic Bundle

There's no way to buy Sonic the fighters separately so that I can play it on my XBOX ONE

They did port it via the Yakuza Like A Dragon and Judgement games but for some reason that version doesn't feel as responsive

Then again my skills as a competitive player is still very low 😅

I'd love to see this game gain ground
It's very charming and it's one of the few fighting games I actually enjoy watching
